RECIPE | Chocolate raisin buttermilk scones – perfect for a quick breakfast!

t’s no surprise that scones are pretty heavy in fat because butter makes them so light anf fluffy but I found a relatively healthier version of a tasty chocolate chip buttermilk scone fromย Skinnytaste.I changed it a little to add some raisins to add a little more texture to the scone ๐Ÿ™‚

The following is a recipe adapted from Skinnytaste (she has awesome skinny recipes!)

  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp chilled butter cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • egg white for the wash
  • granulated sugar to sprinkle on the top


1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mix the buttermilk, sugar, vanilla extract and egg together in a small mixing bowl.

2. Mix the all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder and salt together. Mix the chilled butter into the flour mixture with your hands until it’s completely broken up. Mix in the chocolate chips and raisins.

3. Stir in the milk mixture until everything is mixed well. Transfer the mixture onto a floured surface. It should be pretty wet at this point. Knead the dough with floured hands and add in more flour (either whole wheat or all purpose) one teaspoon at a time until it’s no longer sticking to your hands.

4. Transfer to your baking tray (I lined mine with parchment pape to eliminate a bit of clean up at the end) Flatten the dough a little so that it’s not too thick.

5. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the top is golden brown. Let it cool completely on a wire rack and cut into slices. If you’re eating it the next day, pop it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before eating. It tastes so much better warm!
